ANNOUNCEMENTS

News from IEA’s Advisory Group on Standardization

ISO/TC 159 is responsible for standardization in the field of ergonomics/human factors. This TC has four SCs, SC 1 ‘General ergonomics principles’ addresses ergonomics principles and processes and includes three WGs. Currently active, as of November 2025, are WG 2 ‘Ergonomic principles related to mental work’ and WG 5 ‘Ergonomic process standards.’ WG 2 developed ISO 10075-3:2004 that establishes principles and requirements for the measurement and assessment of mental workload and specifies the requirements for measurement instruments. This standard is currently undergoing revision in line with the July 2024 update of ISO 10075-2, ‘Design principles.’ WG 5 is developing a new standard for the human-centred organization. This document will provide recommendations for human-centred design principles to be applied throughout the design lifecycle of products and services.

UPCOMING WEBINARS

Fighting Fatigue: Understanding Fatigue Risks in Healthcare and Maritime Industry, 11 December 2025, 15h00 UTC

Fatigue is an insidious risk in all industries, one that is often misunderstood, undiagnosed and unregulated and is arguably the biggest performance shaping factor that affects safety and reliability in most industries, particularly those with time and commercial pressures allied to constraints on team resources. In this webinar the risks of fatigue will be explained, the challenges of managing these risks in healthcare and maritime and potential mitigating strategies will be unpacked. Healthcare and maritime, despite challenging work patterns, are often neglected sectors when talking about fatigue risks and share some common issues in the underpinning contribution of fatigue to safety.

This webinar will support safety professionals to understand fatigue risk in more depth, providing more information on the systemic and practical contributors, and provide insight into how fatigue risks can be pragmatically managed. It will also draw from the experience of other industries, specifically rail, who have systematically embedded fatigue management over the last 3 decades.

The webinar will be applicable to a wide range of safety professionals including, managers, operators, members of safety departments, analysts, auditors, investigators, etc.

Advancing Construction Safety through AI and Computer Vision: Ergonomic Assessment and Real-Time Monitoring, 12 December 2025, 15h00 UTC

This seminar will focus on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a transformative tool for advancing ergonomics research and practice, particularly in evaluating and mitigating occupational risks. The presentation will cover two main research streams: (1) computer vision–based evaluation of work-related musculoskeletal disorder risks, including markerless motion capture, captioning, and motion generation, and (2) wearable biosensor–based fall-risk detection. The session will also address empirical findings, methodological considerations, implementation challenges, and future directions for AI-driven ergonomic assessment and intervention design.

SPOTLIGHT ON IEA TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TC)

After featuring the Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments TC in our previous issue, in this edition, we turn our focus to the Organizational Design and Management TC.

The Organizational Design and Management Technical Committee (ODAM-TC) focuses on organizational design and management issues in human factors and ergonomics, as well as work system design and human-organization interface technology. ODAM is concerned with improving work system performance (e.g., productivity, quality, health and safety, quality of work life) by promoting work system analysis and design practice and the supporting empirical science regarding the technological subsystem, personnel subsystem, external environment, organizational design, and their interactions

Work in this field is quite diverse, spanning applications in a variety of organizations and industries. Individuals in this technical committee may be involved in conducting research, providing consultation to businesses, or applying knowledge in the area to their own organization's concerns. Work in this transdisciplinary field is focused on the interaction of psychosocial, cultural, and technical factors with overall system performance. This encompasses a broad range of organizational, macroergonomics issues within a socio-technical work system design perspective.

Membership and Objectives of the Organizational Design and Management TC

The TC consists of more than 250 members from a broad international community. These individuals work for government agencies, universities and colleges, service and manufacturing enterprises, and research and consulting firms. The TC seeks to foster the exchange of information among members and to promote the expansion of the human factors profession to include considerations of the organizational context of work.

The objectives of the ODAM-TC are as follows:

  • Promote the role of ODAM as a work system design-oriented approach
  • Provide an international forum of scientists, practitioners, academics, and organizations to promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge transfer from ODAM to stakeholders, the academic community, and practitioners.
  • Improve and increase the knowledge regarding the contribution of ODAM and the work system concept to industries, organizations, and corporations.
  • Provide ODAM and related resources and networks to support global communication and networking
  • Contribute to and organize the ODAM TC program tracks for the IEA Congresses
  • Organize the International Symposiums on Human Factors & Ergonomics in Organizational Design and Management

More information the formation of this TC and the current activities can be found here: https://iea.cc/member/organizational-design-and-management/

If you wish to join the Technical Committee Please Click On This Link

TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TCs):

The IEA’s Technical Committees (TCs) are ad-hoc special interest groups that are formed as a platform to exchange up-to-date information on and discuss a particular HFE field. More information is available at: https://iea.cc/leadership/technical-committees/

TC Creation

Reminder: If you, with at least 5 colleagues, share a passion for a particular special interest area which does not exist as a Technical Committee (TC) and you wish to create a new TC, please contact stpchair@ iea.cc for formalizing this. The process is easy and free!

TECHNICAL COMMITTEES (TCs) SIGN UP SHEET

The IEA Technical Committees (TCs) are seeking to expand their membership and invite new members from federated societies. To facilitate this, we have created a sign-up form that provides an overview of the role of Technical Committees, including their four primary functions. By completing the form, you can express your interest in joining up to two TCs. Once submitted, TC administrators will review your submission and reach out for further details.

Sign-up form for Technical Committees: https://forms.gle/mMpZ9V9PhBGHPBHQ6

Joining a TC is free and there are no qualifying criteria (just that you are a member of a federated society) to join and to participate. You can also join more than one TC if your interests are broader. A list of the TCs can be found on the IEA’s website:

https://iea.cc/leadership/technical-committees/.

You are always welcome to reach out to TC chairs in addition.
